Good morning AI enthusiasts!
We’ve got some heavy-hitting headlines in the world of AI today, including upgrades to Stable Diffusion, major drama in the AI creative community, and new AI research on childhood blindness.
PS: Today, we debut (another) revamp to our newsletter design! After continuously reading your feedback, we’ve decided to integrate more images and colors to make our newsletter look a little more friendly.
Now, let’s get into the rundown.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
STABILITY AI
🤝 Stable Diffusion can finally generate hands

In a since-deleted blog post (for unknown reasons), Stability AI announced the launch of SDXL 0.9.
The next model of its prompt-based AI image generator, Stable Diffusion, is expected to produce much more photorealistic images.
Best of all, however, is the fact that it supposedly will be better at generating hands (we’ll believe it when we see it).
Stability AI says the new model is “a leap in creative use cases for generative AI imagery.”

MARVEL
🎥 ‘Secret Invasion’ AI drama

Marvel Studios’ use of AI in the opening of Secret Invasion is next-level cool. However, soon after the episode aired, a report surfaced that the opening (created by AI) cost some people their jobs.
People were pissed.
Today, Method Studios released a statement noting that this isn’t the case:
“AI is just one tool among the array of tool sets our artists used. No artists’ jobs were replaced by incorporating these new tools.”
This is a great example of using AI to enhance- not replace, creative professionals.
RESEARCH
👀 AI helps detect childhood blindness

A recent research paper published in Lancet Digital Health presents findings on a new AI application that doesn't require coding skills or high-cost hardware.
The study reveals that the application can accurately identify severe retinopathy of prematurity (childhood blindness disease) using images sourced from a diverse dataset from the UK, Brazil, and Egypt.
Researchers indicate that this AI model has the capability to diagnose severe retinopathy of prematurity using images captured with a different device than the one initially used to develop the model.
