The Rundown: Graphic design giant Canva just unveiled a major update, integrating multiple new AI features into its Magic Studio — including AI-generated video through a partnership with Runway.
The details:
Magic Media will now allow users to create up to 18-second videos from text prompts or images, powered by Runway's tech.
Other new features include AI-assisted translations, converting documents into videos, and generating design templates from text.
Canva Shield provides security controls and indemnification for enterprises using AI — with a $200 million fund also set up to pay creators when their work is used to train Canva's AI models.
The company said the AI features have been a massive success — with 65M new users in the past year and 16M paying subscribers.
Why it matters: Canva is going all in on AI to automate and expedite design tasks — increasingly making it possible for anyone to be a creator. Proper creator compensation and enterprise protections also show they're approaching it responsibly.

The Rundown: A new study from Stanford analyzed whether large language models like GPT-4 could generate helpful feedback on research papers, with the findings suggesting LLMs can provide constructive critiques at a similar level to a human counterpart.
Key points:
Researchers tested GPT-4 on over 3,000 Nature journal and 1,700 ICLR conference papers.
Over 30% of LLM comments overlapped with human reviewer feedback, on par with human-human agreement.
57% of the 300+ participants found GPT-4 helpful for improving papers, with 20% finding it even better than human reviews.
The relevance: This large-scale analysis brings data to the debate on AI's role in both science and the review process.
Will future scientific studies be conducted, peer reviewed, and published all by artificial intelligence — and simply guided by the human scientist?
