The Rundown: OpenAI just announced the return of ChatGPT browsing, with the chatbot now gaining up-to-date access to information across the internet via integration with Bing search.

The details:

  • ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users can enable web browsing, with the feature expanding to the free tier shortly.

  • The feature returns after being disabled months ago following the tool bypassing publisher paywalls.

  • With access to real-time data, the move greatly expands ChatGPT’s knowledge beyond its previously limiting 2021 training data cutoff.

  • We made some demos in this Twitter thread to test the power of the feature and expose some potential flaws.

Why it matters: While ChatGPT has undoubtedly been a revelation, its knowledge cutoff proved constraining. This new move takes the chatbot one step closer to being the ultimate replacement for traditional search engines.

OPENAI

The Rundown: Former iPhone designer Jony Ive is reportedly in talks with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about developing new AI hardware device.

Key points:

  • Details are scarce, but a report revealed that the longtime friends are exploring an unspecified AI device together.

  • It wouldn't be the duo’s first partnership — they’ve previously worked together on the Worldcoin AI retina scanner.

  • Altman also backs Humane, a wearable startup run by ex-Apple staff, collaborating with OpenAI on physical AI integrations.

Our thoughts: OpenAI expanding from software into hardware and Jony Ive's design expertise could really shake up the entire electronics market. Can a hyper-smart OpenAI device give the legacy giants a run for their money?

AI TRAINING

ChatGPT’s built-in browsing capability has returned with a bang — allowing real-time access to online information (no more outdated to September 2021!).

Users with ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise will have access.

Enable browsing: Update to the latest ChatGPT version, then navigate to Settings → Beta Features → toggle on Browse with Bing.

How to use it: Type requests like "Search for news on artificial intelligence" and ChatGPT will instantly pull fresh web results. Continue the conversation with additional modifiers like “give me a three-sentence rundown of each major topic from today.”

Dig deeper: Have ChatGPT click specific links to extract details, quoting useful text for later reference.

With web access at its fingertips, ChatGPT can now deliver up-to-date info on any topic imaginable — truly creating an answer engine to disrupt legacy search.

QUICK HITS

Meta is unleashing new AI capabilities across its family of apps and devices — including AI-generated stickers, image editors, and conversational assistant bots across the company’s platforms. Bing AI is set to power timely answers in Meta's chatbots, integrating into its AI across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

After months of tense negotiations, Hollywood screenwriters have finally won a new contract to end the strike. The agreement limits how studios can use AI tools to generate content, with writers securing guarantees that bots can't get credits or fully replace humans.

Is AI going nuclear? A new job posting from Microsoft hints that the tech giant may be pivoting to advanced nuclear reactors for clean energy to power data centers and AI. The company is scoping out smaller modular reactors — but uranium supply and waste concerns could create headaches.
