The Rundown: Anthropic's Claude 3 Opus model has surpassed OpenAI's GPT-4 for the first time on the LMSYS Chatbot Arena leaderboard.
The details:
The LMSYS Chatbot Arena is a crowdsourced platform used by AI researchers to gauge the relative capabilities of AI language models.
GPT-4 models have consistently topped the Chatbot Arena charts since the leaderboard's launch in May 2023.
Claude 3's rise showcases growing competition in the LLM space, with many already replacing ChatGPT with Claude 3 in their daily workflows.
OpenAI is expected to release a major successor to GPT-4 Turbo (potentially GPT-4.5 or GPT-5) sometime this year.
Why it matters: Claude 3's ascent is a pretty significant milestone in the rapidly evolving LLM landscape. As competitors like Anthropic and Google continue to gain ground with increasingly capable models — the pressure is on for OpenAI to respond with the next groundbreaking release.

AMAZON

The Rundown: Amazon just announced an additional $2.75 billion investment in Anthropic, on top of its initial $1.25 billion, marking the tech giant's largest outside investment in its history.
The details:
Amazon will maintain a minority stake in Anthropic but won't hold a board seat.
Anthropic has now raised roughly $7.3 billion across five funding rounds in the past year alone, valuing the company at $18.4 billion.
As part of the deal, Anthropic will use AWS as its primary cloud provider and leverage Amazon's custom AI chips.
Why it matters: With cloud giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google all competing for an edge, the AI arms race is only heating up — and Anthropic is emerging as a top player to watch.

The Rundown: Microsoft Copilot’s new update now supports inline image editing — meaning you can now edit AI images directly within Copilot after generating them.
Step-by-step:
Head to Microsoft Copilot.
Enter a prompt to create your desired image.
Select your preferred image to change the style or elements using the menu of options.
Move your mouse over the image and select the main subject.
Edit the background of the image, such as adding “Blur“ or “Color pop“.
DATABRICKS
The Rundown: Databricks just announced DBRX, a new open-sourced large language model (LLM) with advanced capabilities in language and code understanding.
The details:
DBRX outperforms major open-source models including Mixtral MoE, Llama-2 70B, and Grok-1 on language understanding, Programming, and Math.
Its inference is up to 2x faster than LLaMA2-70B and is about 40% of the size of Grok-1 in both total and active parameter counts.
The model surpasses GPT-3.5 on long-context tasks and RAG benchmarks.
It reportedly took just $10M and two months to train DBRX from scratch.
Why it matters: Databricks's creation of a GPT 3.5 level model with just $10M and two months sets a new standard for the industry. But while topping the open-source leaderboard is impressive, Meta’s highly anticipated Llama 3 is coming soon, meaning the model likely won’t stay on top for long.
