The Rundown: OpenAI has released ‘Custom instructions,‘ a huge update to ChatGPT. It gives you more control over responses by setting instructions for the model to remember across all conversations.

Details:

  • Allows you to insert two prompts of up to 1500 characters for ChatGPT to remember across conversations

  • Available in Beta for Plus users (everywhere except for the UK and EU) and ‘coming soon’ to free users

  • To enable, click the three dots under your ChatGPT history → Settings & Beta → Beta Features → Custom Instructions

  • Besides custom instructions, OpenAI has also increased GPT-4’s message cap from 25 to 50 every 3 hours

Insane examples (within the past 12 hours):

  • Nick Dobos showed us how to recreate babyAGI

  • Roman Semenov jailbroke ChatGPT against previous instructions

This update comes just 11 days after the release of Code Interpreter. The production speed of OpenAI is truly incredible.

The Rundown: Google is actively meeting with news organizations to pitch an AI tool, code-named "Genesis," that can write news articles.

Details:

  • The tool has been pitched to several publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the owner of The Wall Street Journal

  • Some executives found it "unsettling," expressing concerns about AI producing inaccurate news stories

  • Google clarifies that the AI-enabled tools are not meant to replace journalists but rather to act as co-pilots

Our take: Will AI replace clickbait journalists? Possibly. Will AI replace fact-checking? No. The role of investigative journalism and hard fact-checking will be more important than ever in the age of AI-generated content.

NEW YORK POLICE

The Rundown: Police in New York used an AI-driven platform called Rekor to identify and apprehend a drug trafficker named David Zayas.

Details:

  • The platform uses an automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) system with 480 cameras to scan 16 million vehicles a week, collecting data like license plate numbers, make, and model

  • Rekor's software analyzes regional traffic patterns and records vehicle trajectories to identify suspicious behavior

  • By assessing Zayas' travel patterns between Massachusetts and upstate New York, the algorithm determined that his activity was similar to a drug trafficker

Our take: While AI allowing law enforcement to identify criminal behavior is amazing, it’s slightly concerning to think of the potential for misuse and invasion of privacy.
