The Rundown: Google DeepMind is bringing us a step closer to a robot-filled future with their newly launched vision-language-action model, RT-2, that uses internet data for better robotic control.
Key details:
It allows robots not only to understand human instructions but also to translate them into actions.
RT-2 is trained on text and images from the web, allowing it to transfer knowledge to robot behavior, making it capable of "speaking robot."
RT-2 can recognize trash and dispose of it, or pick out objects like a dinosaur figurine when commanded.
Why it matters: While there's still a long way to go before we have robots doing our dishes, RT-2 is bringing that future a little bit closer.

INTEL
The Rundown: During the Q2 2023 earnings call, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said the company will build AI into every product it builds.
Details:
Intel's upcoming consumer chip, Meteor Lake, will have a built-in neural processor for machine learning tasks.
Gelsinger emphasizes that AI won't always rely on the cloud and expects AI to be in all Intel products.
Intel aims to enable AI at the client and edge levels.
Why it matters: 76.7% of laptops in the world use Intel processors. AI being built directly into those processors is game-changing.

A new Pew Research Center report found that over 27 million Americans are working in jobs where AI could replace or assist their key activities. Some workers in industries more exposed to AI seem less concerned about its impact on them personally, according to the study.
MIT researchers have developed PhotoGuard, a technique to prevent unauthorized manipulation of images by generative AI systems like deep fakes, using invisible protective masks that disrupt the output of AI models.
The FBI warns that cyberattacks using AI technology are increasing rapidly, with hackers using AI models for phishing attacks and developing malware that can evade security systems. Open-source AI models are a particular concern for law enforcement.
