The Rundown: OpenAI just launched GPTBot, a web crawler that automatically scrapes data from the internet for improving future AI models (GPT-5, we’re looking at you).
Key points:
GPTBot filters out paywall-restricted and policy-violating sources but allows site owners to choose whether to grant access.
Website owners can restrict GPTBot by modifying their robots.txt file.
This raises legal and ethical concerns regarding the use of scraped web data for training AI systems, copyright infringement, and model degradation.
Our thoughts: OpenAI just launched a web crawler working 24/7 scraping the internet. Expected, but still slightly concerning.
