The Rundown: Stability AI has released SDXL 1.0, an open model that is the next major leap in the evolution of text-to-image generation models.
Key points:
The model can generate high-quality images in any art style, including photorealism.
Improved ability to interpret simpler language and accurately distinguish between similar terms with different meanings.
The model is the largest open image model, with a total parameter count of 10.1 billion.
Try SDXL 1.0 on Clipdrop here.
Our take: The quality of SDXL 1.0 is shockingly good, rivaling that of Midjourney. It will be very interesting to watch what folks build in the coming weeks using the open model.

NATURE

The Rundown: A new study published in Nature introduced HADAR (Heat-Assisted Detection and Ranging), a camera imaging system based on AI interpretations of heat signatures that could revolutionize how autonomous vehicles and robots perceive the world around them.
Details:
HADAR cuts through visual obstructions like fog, smoke, and darkness.
Unlike sonar, radar and LiDAR (which rely on reflected signals), HADAR uses invisible infrared radiation to reconstruct scenes with clarity similar to daylight, even in darkness.
HADAR could be utilized in AI systems for self-driving vehicles, autonomous robots, and touchless security screenings at public events.
What this means: HADAR lets machines see in the dark. A little scary, but this could lead to safer autonomous systems in the future.
FRONTIER MODEL FORUM
The Rundown: In response to growing calls for regulation, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have formed the Frontier Model Forum, an industry body that promotes the safe and responsible development of AI models.
Details:
Aims to advance AI safety research, identify best practices, and collaborate with policymakers, academia, and civil society to mitigate risks.
Plans to support the development of applications that address major societal challenges, such as climate change and early cancer detection.
Reflects Big Tech's desire to address safety concerns proactively and potentially create their own rules ahead of imposed regulations.
Why it matters: With the formation, big tech makes it clear that it's not just about creating awesome tech anymore. It's about making sure that tech plays nicely with the rest of the world.
