The Rundown: Ukraine is reportedly using AI-equipped drones that can identify and strike targets without human oversight, marking the first battlefield use of "killer robots."
The details:
The Saker Scout drone carries up to 3kg of bombs and has autonomous modes for recon and attack.
Its AI vision system can recognize 64 military vehicle types, like tanks, and verify targets before striking without human oversight.
Ukraine claims the autonomous attack function has been used successfully so far, but only on a small scale.
Many are advocating for legal bans on these systems over ethical issues, but currently no regulations exist.

The Rundown: A computer science student from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has used AI to decipher the first ever words from a burned Herculaneum scroll, buried in the 79AD Mt. Vesuvius eruption.
The details:
The fragile scrolls can't be physically unrolled, with CT scans revealing carbon ink that was invisible to the human eye.
An AI machine-learning model detected subtle microscopic texture differences between inked vs blank areas in the scans.
The model revealed the Greek word "porphyras" meaning "purple"” providing a proof of concept that text can be read.
Hundreds of other still unopened scrolls exist from this luxury villa's library, the only intact one from ancient Greco-Roman times.
The relevance: This breakthrough shows AI's potential to unlock vast knowledge from our past. While most ancient texts are lost forever, digitally resurrecting even fragments allows for glimpses into the forgotten eras.
